The “Empowering America Act’ Would Extend through 2015

The federal tax credit for homeowners with photovoltaic systems has been extended until the end of 2008, and there is currently a bill in committee (the “Empowering America Actâ€￾) to extend the credit another five years beyond that.

Home owners with PV systems qualify for a federal tax credit of 30 percent of the cost, up to $2,000. The system must provide electricity for the residence, and must meet applicable fire and electrical standards.

The “Empowering America Act,â€￾ H.R. 5985, was introduced by US Representative Dennis Cardoza (D–CA) would extend the federal solar tax credit for both homeowners and businesses through 2015.

One of the key components of the proposed bill is that it would protect solar consumers from rulings that restrict the location of solar systems on rooftop. It would also help protect customers from excessive fees for permits and licenses.

“I have introduced this bill and installed solar panels on my own home because I believe alternative energy sources such as solar are absolutely critical for the future of our economy and our national security,â€￾ said Rep. Cardoza. “These incentives would help make solar energy more affordable
