my only experience was with old ones, 30 years ago, and I can only hope they are much improved. I've seen the long tube in a fixture, and the spiral tube CFL to screw into a standard base (12V) . They are prone to a several minute startup from low light to full brightness, and some don't start at all in the cold (below +35F) The CFL (spiral) styles need to keep the electronics in the base cool, so "base down" fixtures are better for the full lifetime. |
