Hi,
I have a south facing roof that is clear for most of the day but is partially shaded by trees in the morning and evening.

I'm trying to work around the shading, can anyone tell me which of these two options is better or does it matter?

One option is to have one string of panels that would be partly shaded before 10am and after 4:30pm

The 2nd option is to have two strings, and eastern string shaded before 10 and after 5:30, and a wester string shaded before 9:00 am and after 4:30.

Thanks

First option for sure ... that way one array is always giving its most and the second comes in and out ... Sun from 9 to 4 will get about 60-90% of the clear view harvest, depending on the time of year ( summer are longer days and would be more impacted )

Thanks for the quick reply. So if I understand you the single string is better, because it's going to get most of the full days sun anyway?

Yes, the shaded panels will just be bypassed ( internal diodes ) and the GT inverter will just track to the lower voltage .. this works best with a single string

I agree with solar guppy. The first option is the better choice.
