I looked at the price of the remote sensor for the SunSaver MPPT model # SS-MPPT-15l. I thought the price was outrageous. About 10 years ago I bought some remote sensors and added my own wire. I used them for a DIY solar hot water install I did.

At the time, you could buy sensors from big electronic houses like Mouser, Cole-Parmer and Allied Electronics. The sensors cost around $2.00 to $3.00 each. You added your own wire then you would heat shrink the soldered connection.

Has anyone bought the MorningStar branded sensor for the SunSaver MPPT charge controller model SS-MPPT-15L? The paperwork that came with your sensor might have some specs with it. Can you share that info? Maybe the sensor itself has a model number or name stamped on it?

I can price shop the big electronic supply houses once I know what we need and post the info here for everyone. I don't know squat about solar PVs, but I work in the electronics field and can find my way around discrete componets.

You can make one from a 10K NTC thermistor that can be scavenged from any thing from a thermal electric water cooler to hot tub temp sensor, they are in nearly any thing that measures temperature.

The 10K NTC is a rather prolific type of thermistor, it will read 10,ooo ohms at 21C within 5%, and the resistance will drop as it warms, they can be purchased very cheaply from any electronic component shop. You will have to make the part that attachés to the battery but this is very simple to do!

Not 100% sure on these but I have hard good things about all of these manufacturers. Still a newbie to this but I have heard the most things about Allied Electronics sensor. From what I understand it does very well. But you can always jurryrig something from a hot-tub as well like the above poster said.
