 Post subject: two inverters
PostPosted: Mon Aug 21, 2006 10:56 pm GMT EstGMT
If I have two GT3.0 inverters connected with a CAT6 it appears that I still need to have a cat6 running to each inverter to get data from each inverter.
The system option only gives partial data,

Also I've only connected the first eight wires to the db9 connector. Is this ok or an I missing something or might i damage something.

Thanks for the great software,

DB9 connectors, for GT reporting need only 3 wires,
pin 2 to 2 Data
pin 3 to 3 Data-
pin 5 to 5 Gnd

It's in the GT-View manual

Thanks for the help.

What page are the pin connections on in the manual?

Do I need to connect each inverter to get all the inverter data even though I have the two inverters linked and one connected to the PC.

Would I need to connect a separate DB9 for each inverter into the computer?
I only have on DB9 port.
Could I use the RJ45 port on the computer?

Thanks again

GT Series RS232 Commands :
http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/1626/docserve.asp page 6
3. Protocol
The GT inverter implements a standard RS232 protocol. It is designed to be a data communication
equipment (DCE); therefore, on the DB9, pin 2 is the transmit data pin and pin 3 is the receive pin. To
connect to a computer ( DTE ) a straight through cable is needed.
The settings for the RS232 are 9600-N-8-1.

linked inverters only share some data. to view complete data from all inverters, you need several DB9 serial cables. Some folks report success with USB ports and converters, but I have 1 inverter, and have not tried it.

The RJ connector on the inverter uses a NON STANDARD connection, it is not Ethernet data. It will fry your Computer & Inverter. I think anyone who takes a current standard connector like a RJ45, and puts non-standard data into it, should be held libel for ALL damages. POOR interface design, in order to simplify buying jumper cables to chain inverters. They should have used 16 pin DIP jumpers or anything else.

Just a note,

Only registered members can post on the Solar Guppy Fourms, I didn't set the permissions properly when I created this section, so we have a few Guest posters on this thread. Any follow up's will require you to register.

I don't do anything with the registration info, it is to stop on onslaught of spamers out there, nothing else

Thanks for the help. We now have both inverters connected.
One serial and one usb.
Is there a way to have on inverter report all parameters and the total system output from both inverters.
Thanks again for the assistance.

Yes,

You need to use a standard RJ45 network cable and connect the two inverters using the Xanbus ports. Then the inverters will calculate and report the system AC output and kWh via the system mode in GT-View ( RS-232 ).

Look in the Xantrex GT User manual if you need more detailed information

Let me try to rephrase the question.

I would like to view the entire output from both of my inverters and view the system output at the same time.
Is this possible?

I already have the units connected.

I presume this is not possible but thought I'd ask.

Also what is the best way to display the logged data excel graph? And has someone already completed an excel template to display data.

As also your help has been greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

In GT-View, right click on the display , select settings , under screen options check the box marked Show System Totals

For graphing, I use Excel, just highlight the colums , for example highlight the time and AC Power colums, click on the chart wizard icon and select Line for chart type.
