True, it's not automated but I would hardly call flipping 2 switched a lot of work. And it wouldn't take much effort to add an automatic transfer switch. Keep in mind that we were talking about backup systems for people using grid tie inverters where outages are rare and usually short term. For me, the only critical circuits are the refrigerator and freezer, so I couldn't justify a big expenditure for something that will get little or no use.
