Post subject: Xantrex: Daily Data Logging Options
PostPosted: Mon Jul 18, 2005 10:04 pm GMT EthGMT
I want to manually download daily logging information from my Xantrex GT 3.0 inverter. It is my understanding that when manually downloading information, it only captures that day's info and the cumulative total.

I do not want to have a dedicated link with a computer on all the time to capture daily logging info.

Do you know if there is any product that could plug into the inverter to capture the data (hourly and/or daily). I then could download the information to my computer from that device at will.

Thank you,

SolarinAustin

The GT has no provisions for retaining daily production, each morning it is reset to start the new day.

GT-View will retrieve the daily and lifetime values once communications are established so if you ran once a night for a minute you could get the information.

If your question is if there is a third party dongle that would do this, the answer is no. Closest thing would be an old 50 dollar laptop off eBay computer running GT-View.

Post subject: Further Clarification to Data Logging (Hardware)
PostPosted: Fri Jul 22, 2005 9:15 pm GMT EndGMT
I was trying to find a device that would plug into my GT 3.0 inverter that would capture the logging information and store it. It would be self contained (battery operated?). I then would unplug the device and download the information into my computer on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis (depending on the battery life and storage capacity of the device).

I am trying to avoid having a computer continuously hooked up to the inverter or manually capturing the information daily.

I have searched the internet and found all sorts of data loggers but not sure how they would work in this situation. There must be something out there that simply captures the inverter's data.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

solarinaustin

The difficulty with data loggers is that the inverters only respond to commands sent to them. Unless the loggers can send specific strings and store the replies they won't work.

If you are comfortable programming, I'd suggest a Pocket PC or Palm with a SD card slot, AC adapter and serial cable.

Post subject: Connecting Inverter (outside) to Computer (inside)
PostPosted: Wed Aug 10, 2005 10:38 pm GMT EthGMT
Okay....giving up finding a device to connect to inverter. My new dilema.................

I have an existing (unused) cat-5 cable wired to a room. Is it possible to use this cable to connect to to my computer. If so which connectors do I use on the outside.....and then on the inside (I believe the inside has a bnc?? type connector)......

thank you again for any suggestions...

Bob

Yes , Cat5 can be used , though beware the GT's RJ45 is for Xanbus , Not ethernet

If the cable had RJ45's, clip off the end and solder on standard db9 connectors , pins #2,#3,#5 straight thru ( one to one ) to your PC's serial port
