Using a small wind turbine with an 12 vac electric magnetic motor using a bridge rectifier with an output of 12vdc @1000W at start up. With a maximum output of 70 v before cutout. Is there a grid tie unit in the market place for this application. The STXR requires 5 min safety above 50 vdc before turn on. This is ok in sustained winds, however the unit produces an average constant power around 30v. SMA’s Windy Boy will not work either. Any suggestions?

The Suntie cutout is 40 Volts DC , The 50 Volts is for initial turn on. (XR-UPG)

I had talked with Xantrex about making a WinTie (SunTie with modified code) but they didn't have an interest.

A simple way to get around the low voltage drop out is to have a wallwart at 30 volts diode or'ed into the combiner board , this will keep the unit in the 8 second timer mode and not the 5 minute mode.

The Suntie will still be operating at 30 volts but the converters are turned off , as soon as the wind generator gets above 40 volts the Suntie will turn on the converters and start feeding power to the grid. You still have to get the voltage above 40 volts (50 volts for initial turn on) to get into the 8 second timeout

The Mppt isn't going to like to constantly changing voltage either , what is really needed (and what I proposed to xantrex) is a constant voltage mode , where you would have a set target voltage.

If you already have a XR-UPG Suntie , using the wallwart trick won't harm anything , but only actually hooking it up to the wind generator will tell if the mppt would work well enough to sell power.

Hope this helps !

Henry
