does anyone have any opinions on these two inverters as far as being as good as the gt 3.0 ? i have a smallish system to do and was thinking of using the 2.5

They are identical units, its only software ID and labeling changes.

Xantrex trys to meet market demands and adjusts pricing to make sure it has an inverter to match whatever the competitors are selling.

The GT 2.5 is to make it a larger price leader against the SMA SB2500U while not leaving money on the table to compete with the PVPowered & Fronuis units in the 3kW range.
